Starting School
In the autumn before the children start school parents will receive written confirmation to inform them if their child has been offered a place. Children start school in the year of their sixth birthday. Priority is given to siblings and children of former pupils. Places are then offered to children on the waiting list. If a place has not been offered we recommend that you stay in touch with the school should a place become available at short notice.
First school visit
Children who have been offered a place are invited to visit the school on the first Saturday morning in December. They get a chance to explore the school, meet their new teachers and class mates. Parents too get an opportunity to say hello to each other.
During late spring the children revisit the school and take part in a normal school day. This gives us the opportunity to get to know your child and to gauge their educational needs.
A Normal Day in Preschool
There are three adults connected with each class. The class teacher is with the class full time and an assistant who is with the class for part of the day. In addition, the teacher who will be the class teacher in year 0 spend three hours a week in the classroom to get to know the children well and thereby ensure as smooth a transition to Year 1 as possible.
A day in Preschool begins with Morgensang (assembly) and is a chance for the children to sing songs together and to share stories and news from their own lives. Morgensang is also an excellent opportunity to teach the children the days of the week, letters and numbers etc.
After Morgensang the children split into their classes and carry on with the learning of the day. The focus of the day may be on something creative or on reading or maths. Twice a week the class is split in two with one half focussing on English, the other on IT.
A trip to the library is a regular occurrence and the children also have two hours of PE a week.
